Reiki: Balancing Body, Mind and Spirit

Reiki is a hands-on healing technique that channels and cultivates Universal Life Energy.  The practitioner approaches the body as a balance of physical, mental, and energetic systems – or more popular today: mind/body/spirit, and works to bring these systems into harmony. This alignment then synchronizes the communication between systems and  triggers a healing response.  Our bodies are designed to repair and heal themselves when disturbances in the bioelectric field are released.

A Reiki Session

A Reiki session involves the practitioner scanning your body to find imbalances in the bioelectric field, and then treating what they sense from that scan.  The scan is done by holding their hand over your body and scanning from head to toe, feeling for energy ebbs and flows, strengths and weaknesses. They may also scan the areas of your chakra energy centers. There are then a series of hand positions that a practitioner will use to lightly touch the body while trying to “fine tune” or synchronize the patient’s energy field. With these bioelectric fields “tuned”, one feels more relaxed, less stressed, and in greater resonance with the world-at-large.  It is in this flow state that real healing can occur.

Reiki and the Chakras

Since science confirms that we all have a vibrational component as part of our bioelectric field, we understand from physics that vibration also has a color aspect (wavelength) and a sound aspect.  The ancient Indian Ayervedic teachings alluded to seven major energy centers that are positioned vertically and aligned with the spine. They are called Chakras.   Chakra energy vibrations are associated with different colors (wavelength of light) and with unique sound vibrations. Each Chakra also had an affiliation with a certain organ system, emotional attachment, and spiritual tendency and goal. Ancient traditional chanting was one way to activate or fine tune the vibrations of these energy centers through the use of sound vibration.  Many cultures developed singing and chanting as part of their religious offerings and thus helped to tune the vibrational qualities (and thus health) of our lives.  Light and colors are another way that these Chakras can be tuned to their proper vibration.  Light therapy, sun bathing, spending time out of doors are all positive ways that we may use light as a means of vibration attunement.

Since Reiki is also proficient at tuning the vibrations of tissues and organs, it is also a particularly good technique for improving the vibrational resonance of the Chakras of the body.  This can then allow that entire vibrational system within us to operate more efficiently, in better resonance with the other energetic structures in our bodies.  Thus, Reiki can be applied to the energy centers of the body – Chakras, as well as to tune the vibration of specific organs and body systems directly.

Origins in Japan

Hawayo Takata, a Hawaiian born Japanese woman studied a number of styles of Reiki in Japan and returned to Hawaii to open up her own Reiki clinic utilizing Usui- style Reiki predominantly. She passed the Masters Level teachings on to twenty-two Americans who would then bring this teaching to the U.S. mainland. One of those Americans was John Harvey Gray and John (Hanson) studied with him.

Personal Experience

Prior to becoming an Acupuncturist, John was a Marketing Executive in a stressful High-Tech environment. The pressures contributed to the development of IBS. John sought treatment  from a Reiki practitioner, John Harvey Gray, who would later become his teacher. Reiki relieved his IBS symptoms, but also taught him how to manage stress more effectively.
